The CONDC is delighted to add a new seminar this year - a day dedicated to different sports that you and your Newf can enjoy!
All breeds are welcome so if you don't have a Newf you can still come out and play with us!
The seminar will run from 9am to 3:30pm.
Please arrive by 8:45am.
To register for the seminar online click on Register Now or you can download the Event Registration Form to be mailed/emailed back to us. The Event Registration Form can be found in the Reference Documents section below.
We will be going over the following foundations that will assist you in participating in any sport:
We will also be introducing you to the following sports:
Our goal for this seminar is to provide you with enough information to decide if one or more of these sports are of interest and ensure you have the foundation to be successful!
Members - $50
Non-Members - $70
All breeds are welcome!
NOTE: There are lots of fast food options close by if you would prefer to purchase lunch.
What can I bring to the seminar, you ask.
I have been involved in competitive and recreational dog events for over 30 years, as a competitor, an instructor and a judge.
During that time I have learned that all dogs and handlers learn things in different ways, and there is not just one way to learn or teach anything.
As an instructor I find it very rewarding to watch that look of pride come over a handler when they connect with their dog and preform the assigned task correctly. That look of accomplishment when you earn a title.
I find that by watching, I can usually figure out the best way to help both handler and dog come together. When judging I look for the same team work as they go through the exercises. Learning is not an exact
science, and requires time and patience.
As you go through the events today, remember there may be some things that don't interest you or your dog, that's OK. This day is to show what is out there and try them on to see if they fit.
Remember to have fun.
In the realm of dog sports, there is a myriad of opportunities for handlers and dogs for any level.
After having worked our way through various credentials in obedience, rally, tricks, draft and water rescue, we learned very quickly any sport can be fun, nerve wracking, fascinating and intimidating all at the same time. As part of a CONDC training team, we help handlers work through the learning process with a primary goal of building a strong communication link as a team and reminding everyone to enjoy the bond one can shape with their dog through activities.
Earning ribbons and titles can be rewarding, however it is significantly, in my opinion, more important to develop a comradery you can enjoy with your dog. Training in any dog sport will build a foundation which can lead to any number of further pursuits, even improving on “doggy-parenting”. By participating in varied introductory seminars, hopefully each handler can find a topic to capture their interest and we can help you work on achieving personal goals.
I have been involved with training and trialing dogs in obedience, rally obedience, water rescue and draft for over 30 years.
My goal when I am working with my own dog is to have a happy and enthusiastic partner; when I am teaching a workshop the goal is to provide the information needed to achieve success; and when I am judging to try to provide positive feedback on that day's performance and hopefully to congratulate the team(s) on a good performance.
I got my start with Newfoundlands by volunteering and fostering with Newf Rescue. I quickly became addicted to the breed and have added 5 to my home over the past 12 years.
I have spent a lot of time participating in different sports for fun. It took a few years to find a Newf companion who wanted to play more seriously and finally entered my first water test in 2024. I am looking forward to doing more with her in 2025!
I enjoy playing with my Newfs and hope to inspire others to join in the fun!
Please reach us at condcworkingchair@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Dogs must be at least 4 months of age in order to participate.
Of course! Sometimes it is easier to learn without bringing a dog with you.
